I’m so in love with these mini paintings my four-year olds made. Aren’t they beautiful? I found a roll of canvas in my attic. The same roll that I had been lugging around since college!! Yes, it’s true. For more than 20 years that roll has been moving from apartment to apartment and house to house. I had always thought I would stretch some more canvases some day and get back into painting. But when I spotted it up there (amongst the 50 or so empty boxes that I keep thinking I’ll use for a project) I had a thought – why not just let the kids paint on it? Kids painting on fabric and canvas is not a novel idea or anything (check out these projects here and here), it’s just that I, myself, had never thought of it before. So I brought it down and cut it into small pieces. The kids loved the new material so much, they asked if they could do it again the next week. Um…yes!!

Supplies:
~ Cotton canvas (an art store would have some, or you can get it on Amazon)
~ Tempera paints (I own many brands, I use these for my primary colors and white, and these for my neon)
~ Brushes
~ Water and a damp sponge for cleaning the brushes
Process:
~ Just let them paint! So simple.
The second week I painted some liquid watercolor on the canvas before the kids came. The different colored canvases added a new element.
I think this summer I will experiment with canvas some more at art camp. But perhaps this time a giant collaborative painting!

I love these! I also have a huge stretched canvas in my attic. It’s warped, that’s why I’ve never done anything with it. I should cut it up and try this. Thanks for this idea.. I always love your projects.

This is so beyond gorgeous. Love that you saved that canvas for so long. It’s crazy that we both said “let them paint” in our posts from the same day : ) also, we just made canvas painted pillows and they are sick! you might want to add that to your summer list. The kids really loved it and felt so proud. Maybe my favorite project so far. xo

I love this! Will definitely be purchasing this beautiful neon paint. Do you have an updated link for the primary tempera you like to use? The Amazon link isn’t working, I’m sure because this post is from 5 years ago. Thank you!

hi Dannie, thanks for letting me know! I’ll fix that link… but it was to Crayola’s primary colors. xx Bar
