There is a fad brewing in our house. My daughter and her friend, both 11, came downstairs the other day and showed me their hands. OMG, so beautiful! They had both created the coolest designs on each other with gel pens. Wow!
They called them “henna hands”, named after the Indian tradition of painting on your body with henna dye. She is now a self-proclaimed pro. All of the little girls at art camp have been waiting patiently for their turn with the henna girl.
She uses these super duper neon gel pens. They don’t smudge when dry, but wash off instantly with water. And they are scented! So your hand smells fruity and delicious.
I tweeted the company who makes these cute little gel pens, and they assured me that YES they are non-toxic. Phew, because the henna hands have been the perfect summer craft in our house for the last two weeks. I love when my kids tap into their own creativity and go with it!

these pics!!! I love Gracie. And this whole idea. It’s so cool.
thanks meri…and it’s actually the middle daughter who is the henna hand artiste! it’s so fun to see her inner creativity come out 🙂 xx bar
ohhhh, the middle little lovie. I got tricked! She’s so cool too : ) I’m in love with this post.
This is such a fab idea and looks so pretty – especially as it’s so neatly done by your daughter. My daughter would be delighted to give this a go. I look forward to trying it soon and the fruity smells are a great bonus.

These make me want to try, Bar. LOVE the colours and they feel so girl-perfect!
Genius! Amazing! I love the creative minds of 11 year olds. Our daughters would have fun together, Bar!
LOVE this! Such a creative idea with a beautiful result! And so awesome that the kids came up with it themselves! Kids are the best, aren’t they? 🙂
thank you claire! it’s always the best when you kids can create 100% on their own. i love that!! and for this craft in particular…there is no cleanup, so even better! xo bar
Coolest idea ever!
For the past two weeks, I have brought this activity to the school age kids that I see once every two weeks (8 groups and I spend 5 hours with each group). They have loved Henna Hands! It has “hands down” been the best activity. Even the kids that have typically not participated in activities; have loved this. Thaks!
yay!! so glad to hear this, Janet, thanks for leaving a comment!! xo Bar
A lot of parents might sigh away from activities like these! But thanks to you, your confirmation with the company that the gel pens are indeed non-toxic, really makes the whole artistic idea look a lot more fantastic as well. Children love colours and this is a unique idea to support that.
I think I have another temporary henna idea. Try leaving colored pencils in hot water for a few minutes then write on your hands, it also works well on any part of your body. I used it on my little sister when she wanted to get her face painted but we didn’t have any face paint.
ooh, I’ll try that! they actually make watercolor pencils, did you know that? we use them sometimes in art class. xx bar
OMG! Barbara your doughter is so intelegent and creative minded. Design created by her is amazing and adorable. Well done
Hey I have question.how can you make henna hands if you don’t have gel pens ?
Please reply,
Devyani
Hi Devyani, you can use watercolor paints! They wash off easily, too.
