Make: World Flag Garland

We made this world flag garland back in 2014 for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, but I recently dusted it off because it is so awesome. And I do mean awesome. This one kept my kids busy for days and days.

But more than that, it sparked so many interesting conversations about the world. It was a way for them to see beyond their own country (and get to use rubber cement at the same time).

We discussed everything from the way a flag came to be (many religious crosses, and even more emblems of suns and stars to honor nature), to the climate in different countries and if they would even be in the winter Olympics.

Here’s how to make your own world flag garland, just in time for the Olympics to start in July.

Supplies For World Flag Garland

~ Colored paper (red, green, yellow, two blues, black, white, orange)

~ Paper cutter (optional, you can use scissors)

~ Scissors

~ Hole punch, 1/4 inch

~ White chalk marker (for small stars)

~ Rubber cement or glue stick

~ Flag books from the library

~ Twine

~ Masking tape

Making The World Flag Garland

1. Begin by cutting your paper in quarters. Next, look up a flag and start cutting other colored shapes! We decided to choose one color as the base color, and then layer on top of that. We used rubber cement mostly, making sure to cover both sides before gluing together (ensuring a more durable hold). But you can also use a glue stick.

2. When you’ve made a bunch of flags, you can tape them to the twine. We just folded over some masking tape. That’s it!

We made shorter garlands so that we could keep adding more. But you could also make one long garland to cover a whole room, which would be so cool.

Try to make every flag of every country, and then memorize them in time for the Olympic parade!
