Paper Bag Art Portfolio

I teach art class twice a week for an hour. I have six kids in each class. We work in my living room. The classes are small and completely perfect. At the end of each six-week session, I put each child’s work into a paper bag portfolio. I like to think that I invented these, but I’m wise enough to know there is no such thing as a new idea. It’s just that I have a million brown paper bags and always need a quick way for the kids to carry their work home. Necessity is the mother of invention, right?

The supply list is short:

~ brown paper grocery bag

~ scissors

~ masking tape

~ alphabet rubber stamps if you have them

How to make them:

~ cut down the side, in the middle

~ cut off the bottom

~ tape the two pieces together, both on the inside and outside

Now just fill with artwork! My friend Meri Cherry used my idea (we art teachers share ideas) and made her own version, taping the sides as well so it’s more of a pocket. Very smart!

Sometimes we paint and decorate them. But usually I’m making them in a rush on the last day 🙂

One art-class mom loves these so much she now makes a portfolio every few months and stacks them on a shelf filled with art, labeling the outside with the date and age. How’s that for organized!

Bottom line…these are great. Make one (or twenty)!
