A few weeks ago I received a surprise package ~ the new book by Holly Homer and Rachel Miller! These two ladies have an incredibly successful blog that you should follow immediately called Kids Activities Blog. They sent me a free copy, just because they like me I think. I immediately opened it and started folding down corners on the pages that looked good. And by good I mean stuff I could do with my campers. After folding down about 12 pages, I decided to start with something that I’ve been wanting to try forever: Bubble art!

The book has really good and clear directions, so I won’t give that away. But I will say that we first used gray sulfite paper (like construction paper, but a little more dense…i love this paper!), and it made some really ethereal patterns. I loved it, but the kids thought it was a bit dull. So then I brought out white sulfite paper
. We used just one color to make them monochromatic (we talked about this word in class which was fun to say), but I think next time I will have the kids use multiple colors.
We experimented with the bubbles a lot. They loved building big bubble towers. I mean, LOVED! But then they realized that when all the bubbles melted, the paper just looked like one color and you couldn’t see any circles. It was too saturated. So then they started practicing blowing very delicate bubbles. All in all, they were completely fascinated!
I cut out the paper that was laying on the table ~ the aftermath ~ and hung it up on the wall next to the kids’ work. They walked in the next day for camp and said, “Wow!”, which was very cool.
This book is just so full of fun ideas, I love it. It reminds me of this one book I used to have when the kids were little. I think I gave it to the library when we moved last year which makes me SO SAD! Why would I do that? I was in a purge mode. So I don’t remember what it was called, but 101 Kids Activities is such an awesome replacement. You can do crafts, play games, or do some science-y things. It’s just a very easy way to bring some fun and creativity into your long day with kids. Or my fave idea (which is what it says on the cover) ~ give the book to your babysitter!

{note: As I was writing this blog post I came across Artchoo’s post about the exact same activity from the same book. Oy! Sorry Jeanette, hope I didn’t step on your toes. But you guys should definitely check out her post because she used multiple colors and they were more vibrant.}
Love this Artchoo disclaimer at the bottom : )
