I love figuring out ways to use stuff that I already have in my closet. With Springtime in full bloom, these paper plate flower masks are the perfect idea. We’ve made things with paper plates before, like these party hats and these washi-tape trays. Paper plates are a hidden secret for art teachers. If I need any last minute projects, I know I can always grab them and set something up lickety-split.
This would also be a really cute idea for a classroom to make and then take a big group photo (like the one below). There’s nothing cuter than little faces popping through with a smile.
Supplies for Paper Plate Flower Masks:
~ Xacto knife (for cutting out the center of the plate)
~ Colored and patterned paper, cut into smaller pieces
~ Scissors (if they want to cut their own paper pieces)
~ Glue
~ Beads or pom-poms
How to make Paper Plate Flower Masks:
1. First they paint. We used watercolor palettes, which are the least messy and dry the quickest. If I wanted this to go a bit quicker, I would put out liquid watercolors. With the palettes, I tell them to swish around their color 20 times so they can get a deep, rich hue.
2. I pre-glued the craft sticks on before they came, using a hot glue gun.
3. Once they are finished, they can start gluing on their petals. ‘A little dot will do it!’ is always my motto.
4. When they are done with their petals, they can embellish more with beads.
5. I let them dry overnight, or in this case it was a week until their next art class.
These masks could also definitely be lion masks or sunshine masks. And you can also definitely start this project off with a book about flowers, lions, or sunshine 🙂
