I love painting over newspaper, it’s such a cool look (and also an excellent way to catch up on local news. I didn’t know my friend became a real estate broker, for example). We used our newspaper hearts two ways. One way was to make these postcards, the other way was to make these goody bags!

We used liquid watercolors on newspaper, but you could also use regular palette watercolors.
Today, I am so happy to be sharing this post on Melanie’s killer blog, You Are My Fave. Click over for more photos, full supply list, and tutorial on how to make these cards. Look around while you are there, her blog is FULL of good stuff!

These are beautiful. I was just about to put my old newspapers (yes, we still get one) in the recycle bin, but I’ll use them for this activity instead. Thanks!

we get newspapers too which is a good thing because they make such beautiful backdrops for art. send me photos if you do get around to doing this. thanks Kristen! xo bar

I love this, Igot some old books from a second hand shop. They were too wrecked to sell so we’re free! I’ll be using those!
Barbara Rucci
book pages are the best!! I need to go find some old *free* books to use, too. thanks for the reminder! xo Bar
Jeanine
These look just incredible!! Two questions: What name brand watercolor paints do you use? What type of red paper for backgrounds? Cardstock? I have just never seen such bright colors in watercolors! Excellent!
Barbara Rucci
hi jeanine! yes, just red card stock that you can find on Amazon. and the liquid watercolors are from an art supply company called Dick Blick. i buy their own brand. but you can also buy liquid watercolors on Amazon, i would buy the ones called “Sargent Art 10-Count 4-Ounce Watercolor Magic”. this would get you a nice starter set in smaller bottles. good luck!! xo bar
Kelli
I love these! Easy for a just turned four year old?
Barbara Rucci
Hi Kelli, yes! My son in the photos was four when he made these. He might have been a late 4, but still…just have your child paint postcard in reddish/pink colors and then you can glue the hearts on top! Good luck, and happy new year! xo Bar
